Solar Storm Hitting Ionosphere, Galactic Current Sheet | S0 News Mar.25.2024

    Level 4 Solar Storm

SEVERE GEOMAGNETIC STORM--THE STRONGEST IN YEARS: As predicted, a CME struck Earth's magnetic field on March 24th (1437 UT). The impact opened a crack in our planet's magnetosphere and sparked a severe G4-class geomagnetic storm--the strongest geomagnetic storm since Sept. 2017. Solar wind speed: 760.3 km/sec

The timing of the CME did *not* favor observers in Europe or the United States. Instead, New Zealand got the light show:

"I woke up early and, when I saw that a storm was underway, jumped out of bed and raced to my favourite viewing spot at Hoopers Inlet," says photographer Ian Griffin. "The beautiful aurora australis was easily visible despite clouds and bright moonlight."

In England, it was broad daylight when the CME struck. Auroras could not be seen. Nevertheless, Stuart Green of Preston, England detected the storm using his backyard magnetometer:

    https://www.spaceweather.com/images2024/24mar24/g4_strip.jpg

"My magnetometer kicked into life mid-afternoon here in the UK," says Green. "The arrival of the CME created a severe disturbance."

The squiggles in Green's chart represent changes in ground-level magnetic fields caused by the CME. "The sensor is buried in my garden about 0.5 meters below the surface in an East/West orientation," he explains. "This allows very sensitive (sub nanotesla) measurements of magnetic declination during geomagnetic storms."

    Level 4 Solar Storm

CONTINUED THREAT OF STORMY WEATHER: Sunday's severe geomagnetic storm is over, but the calm might not last. Giant shape-shifting sunspot AR3615 poses a continued threat for Earth-directed solar flares. NOAA forecasters say there is a 25% chance of X-flares today and tomorrow. If the sunspot blows, it would give sky watchers in Europe and the USA a second chance at auroras this week. Solar wind speed: 617.6 km/sec

Strongest Space Weather of the Year, Enceladus | S0 News Mar.27.2024

CHANCE OF FLARES TODAY: Although it has been mostly quiet for the past 48 hours, sunspot AR3615 poses a continued threat for strong solar flares. The giant active region an unstable delta-class magnetic field that harbors potential energy for significant eruptions. NOAA forecasters say there is a 75% chance of M-class flares and a 25% chance of X-flares on March 27th. Solar wind speed: 513.9 km/sec

A SHARP REDUCTION IN COSMIC RAYS: Astronauts on the International Space Station got a break from their daily dose of cosmic rays on March 24th when radiation levels suddenly dropped more than 14%. What happened? A coronal mass ejection (CME) swept the radiation aside:

    SpaceWeather updates - Page 13 Oulu_anim

This is called a "Forbush decrease," named after American physicist Scott Forbush who studied cosmic rays in the early 20th century. It happens when a CME sweeps past Earth and pushes galactic cosmic rays away from our planet. Radiation from deep space that would normally pepper space stations, satellites, and Earth’s upper atmosphere is briefly wiped out.

In the graph, above, the Forbush decrease is shown as a downward spike in neutron counts recorded at the Sodankyla Geophysical Observatory in Oulu, Finland. Neutrons are a well-known proxy for cosmic rays. When cosmic rays strike Earth's upper atmosphere, they produce a spray of neutrons that reach the ground below. Sensors in Oulu count these "secondary cosmic rays" to monitor activity in space.

This week's Forbush decrease is the biggest of Solar Cycle 25 (so far), exceeding the previous record-holder on Nov. 3-4, 2021 when a potent Cannibal CME dropped neutron counts by 11%.

Pole Shift Speeding Up, Solar Watch, Antarctica | S0 News

SUDDEN QUIET: Solar activity has dropped to low levels as the sun turns a nearly spotless hemisphere toward Earth. Since giant sunspot AR3615 departed last week, the sun's baseline X-ray output has decreased by about a factor of ten. No solar storms are predicted between now and the April 8th solar eclipse. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text

ECLIPSE WEATHER FORECAST: It's a terrible time for clouds. The last total eclipse in the USA for 20 years happens on Monday, April 8th, and, according to forecasts, most of the path of totality will be overcast:
    https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/03/weather/solar-eclipse-weather-forecast/index.html

SpaceWeather updates - Page 13 Statistics

Millions of people traveling to statistically-clear areas in Mexico and Texas could find themselves staring at gray clouds instead of the eclipsed sun. Cloudier parts of New England might, ironically, have a better view.

Spaceweather.com will be in Texas on April 8th to launch cameras high above the clouds. We'll be releasing Earth to Sky cosmic ray research balloons from the path of totality with optics that might catch the Moon's shadow darkening the clouds below--a potentially unique and beautiful view from the stratosphere
